Get In Shape!

Spiritual Fitness!

Will you pass the test? It may sound comical or something we know already but are we spiritually fit? Do we know how to get Spiritually fit?

In today’s society, so much emphasis is put on physical fitness! Don’t get me wrong, it is important to stay healthy and in good physical condition, but it would be a shame to work so hard on your body but neglect your soul! Our physical health is susceptible to disease and injury, but our faith in God can sustain us through anything! 1 Timothy 4:7-9 tells us about the importance of being spiritually fit. We must train ourselves to be Godly by developing our faith and using our God-given abilities to serve him.

Are you exercising your muscles? Highly skilled and talented athletes lose their abilities if they are not exercising their muscles. Just like athletes we will lose our spiritual gifts if we don’t put them to work! What gifts and abilities has God given you? Do you use them regularly by serving God and others?

Some people love working out. I love to work out myself as well and want to get back to doing it more. Not just to look good, but because it makes me feel good too. Most people focus on their health once it’s too late. I want to focus on it Before it is too late!
I have to have a proper training schedule. I have days when I go to the gym, and I try my best not to miss a beat on my set time because if I start slacking I will end up stopping completely.
One day  in particular, I did not feel like going to the gym. I was driving home and I thought to myself, “It’s okay to miss one day, get some rest.” But I ended up going to the gym anyway. And I ended up having a great work out and I thought to myself, “Wow, I feel great! I didn’t feel like coming today, but that was great!” Immediately that soft still voice of the Holy Spirit said to me, “Imagine how you would feel if you did the same with your prayer time.” I literally stopped walking, paused and froze for a minute.
He’s the Way, the Truth and the Light. I have time scheduled for my body but not my spirit! I began setting my alarm to wake me in the morning early enough before I go to work, in order for me to have my quiet time with God. I would hear the alarm ring, hit the snooze button a few times and roll back over telling God I’m going to get up! Then next thing I know I am jumping up to get ready for work. I would tell God we will talk later! How terrible is that???

So that Wow moment at the gym made me ask myself, “Why do I CHOOSE to be disciplined physically more than I choose to be disciplined spiritually? Why do I go to the gym or workout at home, even when I don’t feel like it, but I don’t pray even when I don’t feel like it? Why do I think that the flesh (which is temporary) is more important than my soul, which is going to live forever?”

Having a closer relationship with God is also built upon a life of obedience. Jesus told His disciples in the upper room, “If you love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:23).

If taking care of your physical body can do so much for you physically, just imagine how much more taking care of yourself spiritually will do for your soul. God loves you so much and He wants to have a personal, intimate relationship with you. If you want to have a closer walk with Him, you’ll need to make some changes and some of them will be challenging… like committing to the time that you spend with Him on a daily basis. If you commit to these changes and work on being spiritually fit, you will see the awesome change will make you feel so good and you will want it more and more!

We should partner up and get spiritually fit just like we would partner up to get physically fit! Let’s do it!
