On Assignment for God

Cultivating a Heart of Excellence and Obedience!

When God calls us to do His work, whether it’s a simple act of kindness or a monumental mission, our attitude matters just as much as the action itself. Being on assignment for God isn’t just about fulfilling tasks; it’s about reflecting His character, embracing His purpose, and cultivating a heart of faithfulness.

A Heart of Willingness and Obedience

The first posture we need when we are on assignment for God is one of willingness and obedience. God delights in those who are eager to follow His will, just as Isaiah declared, “Here am I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8). We may not always feel equipped or ready, but God looks for a willing heart. This willingness opens the door for Him to work through us in ways beyond our imagination.

Our obedience to God, even in the small things, reflects our trust in Him. As Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commands” (John 14:15). Obedience is a love language of faith—an outward expression of an inward trust that God’s plans are perfect and His ways are higher than ours.

A Spirit of Excellence

When we are called to serve God, we must also strive for excellence. This isn’t about perfection, but about giving our very best as an offering to Him. Colossians 3:23 reminds us, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” Whether we’re leading a ministry, helping a neighbor, or praying for someone in need, we do it with a spirit of excellence, knowing that we are serving the King of kings.

Excellence honors God and inspires others. When we give our best effort, we mirror the character of God who “makes all things beautiful in its time” (Ecclesiastes 3:11). Our excellence becomes a testimony, pointing others to His glory.

A Mindset of Humility

Humility is another essential attitude when we are on assignment for God. Jesus, our ultimate example, “made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant” (Philippians 2:7). We must approach every God-given task with the same humility, recognizing that the work we do is not about elevating ourselves, but about exalting Him.

When we serve with humility, we understand that it’s not about our abilities, but about God working through us. As Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 15:10, “By the grace of God, I am what I am, and His grace to me was not without effect.” It’s God’s grace that enables us to carry out His work, and it’s His grace that brings the results.

A Heart Full of Joy

Another key aspect of our attitude when working for God is joy. Psalm 100:2 says, “Serve the Lord with gladness; come before His presence with singing.” Joy in serving flows from the knowledge that we are participating in something much greater than ourselves. It transforms even mundane tasks into meaningful acts of worship.

Joy is not dependent on circumstances; it springs from the deep-seated truth that we are co-laboring with Christ (1 Corinthians 3:9). When we approach our assignments with joy, we reflect the heart of God, and our joy becomes contagious to those around us.

A Faith-Filled Perspective

Finally, we must approach God’s assignments with faith. Hebrews 11:6 reminds us that “without faith it is impossible to please God.” When God calls us to something, He also equips us. However, His assignments often stretch our faith. We may not see the full picture, but we can trust that God is always working behind the scenes for our good and His glory (Romans 8:28).

Faith gives us the courage to step out in obedience even when the task seems impossible. It empowers us to trust God’s timing and provision. Like Abraham, who “by faith… went without knowing where he was going” (Hebrews 11:8), we too are called to move forward in faith, trusting that God’s guidance will lead us exactly where we need to be.

Our Assignment, His Glory

When we are on assignment for God, our attitude can determine the effectiveness of our service. A willing heart, a spirit of excellence, humility, joy, and faith are essential postures that honor God and allow His work to flow through us. Every task, big or small, is an opportunity to glorify Him and impact the world around us.

Remember the words of Jesus in Matthew 25:21: “Well done, thy good and faithful servant!” Our ultimate desire should be to hear these words from our Savior, knowing that we completed our assignment with the right heart, for His glory alone.
