Fill Your Tank

Pump Your Own Gas!

Have you ever drove your car on “E” with the gas light on for so long that you ran out of gas? Did you decide to test your car’s limits on how far it will go on empty? If your like me and many others, you hate to pump your own gas. Sometimes my daughter will come get her little brother just so he can pump her gas for her! Today I got in the car with someone whose car was on empty but she said she really doesn’t like pumping gas so she would rather test how long she could go on empty without getting gas. She then thought about the consequences of running out of gas and being stranded, so she made the decision to get some gas even though she really didn’t want to.

What if you went to the gas station and only put $5 worth of gas in your car? How far would you get before you ran out of gas? Have you ever thought about the person that always seems to be able to smile no matter what they may be going through? You know, the person that always seems to bother you because they are always so positive even in the worst of times. Did you ever stop to think that maybe they fill their spiritual tank up more often than you do? Have you ever asked them how can they be so cheerful and stay so positive even when they have a lot to worry about?

Just as we have to provide fuel to our vehicles for them to function, so do we have to fuel our spirits for our spirit man to function! To live a spiritually happy life and have the energy to keep ourselves going as well as pour into others, we have to fill up our spiritual tank regularly! The more we fill our spiritual tank, the better quality of life we will live, just as the more you keep your car gas tank full, the better your car will run!

Often we try to schedule times to read our Bible, or study God’s Word, or spend time in prayer, but we get distracted with our daily schedules and everyday life. We allow people, places, and things to keep us distracted from fueling our spirit and therefore keeping us on “E” and risking the consequences of running out of gas! We then feel guilty for not connecting to God who is the only one that can fill our spiritual tanks. We understand that the way we feel, our state of mind, our circumstances etc… Are the consequences of not fueling our spirits.

We may get distracted or not always feel like studying or praying but if we work on not limiting God’s presence in our lives and get into the habit of including God in all aspects of our lives it would make it easier to get the spiritual fuel that we need. We would not have to worry about fitting Him into our schedules because He would be a part of our daily lives and not just in church or around certain people. We should practice consulting God in every aspect of our lives as well as talking with Him regularly. God wants to be our best friend, the person we run to when we need advice, a companion, a listening ear, and a close relationship. Having this kind of relationship with God will cause us to find ourselves connecting with Him more often and refueling out spirits regularly. When you fuel your spiritual tank, you eliminate the consequences of running out of gas!

The Word of God has the power to ignite your spirit in a way that only He can but you have to make sure that you don’t allow your spirit to run out of gas! Don’t expect someone else to fuel your tank for you. You are the only one that can refuel your tank. Even if your best friend or spouse studies the Word of God and prays regularly, that doesn’t mean that because you are close to them, that qualifies as refueling your tank. This is not something you glean from someone else. You must get it for yourself! You must pump your own gas!

Is your spiritual gas tank full, or are you walking around on “E” testing how far you can go without stopping to get gas? Don’t wait for someone else to pump it for you! Pump your own gas.
