Losing My Religion
Where are you???… Are you on the right road???
Have you ever been in the middle of doing something and thought to yourself, “Where am I” or “What am I doing this for?” You may be going for a walk and before you know it you stop and think “Where am I” or “Why did I walk this way?” Maybe you went to someone’s house and after a while you think to yourself “Why did I come over here?”
Often we do things out of habit or because we were taught to do certain things, never thinking twice if it is the best way for us or what we want to accomplish. Growing up, when you are taught something, it sticks with you and you believe that is the correct way of doing things unless it is proven otherwise. When we are taught something, usually the person doing the teaching adds a little of their own opinions and beliefs into it. That is not always a bad thing but we have to be careful to know the difference.
When it comes to following Christ and being a believer, often man made rules and people’s opinions or perceptions of God’s Word come into play and we have to be careful to know the difference between Jesus’ example and instructions to us and the rules and regulations of religion! Jesus did not come to start a new religion, He came to free us from the bondage of sin and to have a relationship with us!
Have you ever met someone who clearly knows the Bible inside and out, and can teach it with excellence but when you are around them on a daily basis they are mean or are always downgrading someone? They may be very knowledgeable about the Bible but never show the love and compassion of Christ? These are prime examples of someone who has religion down pact but has no relationship with God!
I ask again, where are you? Are you busy doing religion or are you busy having a relationship with God? Are you more worried about listing rules and regulations, or are you more concerned with showing the love of Christ and following His examples? Where are you???
I believe that if we lose our religion and gain more relationship with God, we would see a drastic increase in winning souls for Christ! We need to be examples that show the love of Christ and follow Jesus with compassion and enthusiasm to be more like Him! People today don’t need rules and regulations, they need the power of God’s love and compassion for us!
Just think about it for a minute…. If you were being introduced to someone for the first time, and the first thing that the person introducing you does is give you a list of Do’s and Don’ts in order to be this persons friend, you would probably just walk away and say it’s not worth meeting this person! When we introduce someone to Christ we need to show His love and compassion for us and not just blurt out a bunch of Scriptures and doctrine! People will be more receptive and interested in learning more if they see the value it adds to them instead of just what it will take away.
Where are you? I know that I want the light of the world, my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to shine bright through me to draw in and elevate others to Him! When you are busy doing the work of the Lord and doing duties in the church, stop and ask yourself “Where am I” and how is this letting the light of Jesus Christ shine through me? Is what I’m doing giving God Glory and helping others to learn how to have a relationship with God or is it just practicing religion?
Let us lose our religion to gain relationship with God!
